Hello all!
My name is Cassie and I love all things art – photography, drawing, painting, graphic design, etc….I created this blog because I want to share my passion for art and any random thoughts I would like to write about!
I have always loved art, and some of my earliest memories are of hours spent at the dining room table with a box of crayons, drawing doodle after doodle, sketching mazes and portraits of the people at church, and painting pumpkins and snowflakes in my early art class days. My relationship with art has evolved over the years, starting with those early days of crayons and doodles, to the present days of designing logos and painting murals. Art is an essential part of my identity, and I can’t imagine a life without it!
I hope to pursue a career in art therapy some day, along with graphic design. I believe art has the ability to build strong communities, bring joy to everyone, communicate feelings in a way that words fail to, and is just plain fun! It is something I want to share with the world.
I am inspired by the people, places, and moments I experience in my everyday life. When I see a breathtaking sunset, the evening light shining through lacy curtains, or the works of other creatives, I feel moved to create. I see the world that God has created, and I want to create too!
Along with art, I love playing guitar, listening to music (my music genre preferences range from COIN, Khalid, Old Dominion, and everywhere in between), writing, running, hiking, biking, reading (mostly poetry and biographies), watching sitcoms, spending quality time with friends and family, drinking tea and shopping at thrift stores.
Alright, enough about me, let’s start our first project!
For this post, I will show you how I go about making a portrait.
You will need: A sketchbook or any piece of paper (I used a Canson Mix Media sketchbook), a picture of yourself or someone you would like to draw, a pencil, a tortillon (this is a paper stick used for blending, you can also substitute this with your finger, a paper towel, a napkin, etc.), and anything you would like to use to add a bit of color, such as markers or watercolors.

You will want to start by penciling in the basic outline. Observe the shapes, how do the eyes/mouth/nose line up with the rest of the face? Focus on the basic shapes, try not to overcomplicate it. Remember, this isn’t about perfection!

Now that you’ve finished the outline, start shading. What area has the darkest values? What area is the lightest? Make sure to have a good range of values in your portrait, otherwise it will be flat and will lack dimension.

And now you are ready to color it in, or just leave it the way it is, this is totally up to you! I chose to color my portrait in with watercolors.

Now you can share your creation with the world! Clip it to the front of the fridge, post it on Instagram, brag about it to your co-workers. This is your masterpiece!
Hope you enjoyed this project and learning a little bit about me!
Artfully yours,
Cassie π
